The importance of preventive medicine in today’s world.

Ben Franklin said: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. That statement is more true today than ever before. You know, I come from a time when a kid could ride a bike without a helmet. You could sit in the front seat and the seat belt was really just your Mom’s arm across your chest when she hit the break. If only we knew then what we know now right? Well here is what we know now about preventive medicine. Each year millions of people die preventable deaths. Some of the leading causes are:

  • Obesity
  • Tobacco
  • Alcohol
  • Cardio vascular disease
  • Chronic Respiratory disease

While the list could go on and on the point is this. We have a choice. We can choose to keep doing what we are doing. Go see the Doctor when we are sick. Have them write a script that will deal with the symptoms and may require us to keep using it for life. Or we prevent the problem. I find it ironic but traditionally an economic recession causes people to not utilize preventive medicine. If you think about it being sick is far more expensive than being healthy.

The one thing I know is this. All positive change starts with a collection of individuals who understand that circumstances can be transformed for the good of many. Helmets, Seat belts, Smoking, Women’s rights, Civil rights. No matter how petty or profound the cause, it takes a group of people who are willing to take action and stay the course until the culture advances. If we are serious about improving the quality of life and decreasing the cost of health care in this country. If we are serious about change, we must enlist the power of prevention. That is why we have created the Revive movement. Get your MOJO back!
