An under-active thyroid is not uncommon in women. In fact, one out of 50 women suffers from hypothyroidism, while only 1 out of 1,000 men are affected. The good news is that it’s very easy to treat hypothyroidism for both men and women. In fact, all you have to do is take a pill once a day. But how do you know whether or not your thyroid is currently doing what it should be doing?
You Are Tired or Wired
If you’re constantly feeling tired, exhausted, and down, then your thyroid might not be producing enough thyroid hormones. This is called hypothyroidism. On the other hand, if you’re always hyper, active, and wired, then you might have the opposite problem. Of course, it’s natural to feel tired at times. For example, if you’ve just had a baby or if you’ve been sick, you might feel more tired than normal. But if you always feel listless, then you should consider getting your thyroid levels checked.
Difficulty Concentrating or Remembering Things
Your thyroid hormones are so important to your body that not having the right levels can cause a lot of problems. Symptoms can vary dramatically, depending on whether your thyroid is producing too much or not enough thyroid hormones. In the first case, you may have trouble concentrating, while the latter problem may cause you to be forgetful.
Your Periods Are Changing
Obviously, men won’t have this problem, but for women, your periods can change when your thyroid is not working right. Low levels of thyroid hormones can cause your periods to be heavier with more cramping. Your periods may even be closer together. On the other hand, high levels of thyroid hormones may cause your periods to become shorter in duration and further apart.
You’re Hot or Cold
Having temperature issues is not exclusive to menopause. A thyroid that’s not adjusted may cause you to feel very hot or very cold. While your core body temperature may not change, you may always have cold hands and feet with hypothyroidism. Instead of adding more layers of clothing, you should have some blood tests done in order to rule out thyroid problems.
Diagnosis and Treatment
As stated before, diagnosing a thyroid imbalance isn’t difficult. In fact, it can be done quickly with a simple blood draw.
