Fit man flexingThe hormone testosterone is typically associated with manliness because it has something to do with sexual function, muscle and strength buildup, and body hair. Testosterone levels typically decline with age but the effects of low testosterone don’t just cause changes in the man. Because of their effect on libido they may affect the relationship with his significant other as well.

Diagnosing Low Testosterone Levels

It’s quite possible for a man to go about his business without realizing that his testosterone levels are too low. While he will certainly notice the effects, he may not necessarily be willing to get diagnosed. After all, it can be difficult to talk to someone else about a touchy subject, such as the inability to maintain an erection. Additionally, he may not realize that his problems stem from low levels of the hormone testosterone.

Here are a few signs that may indicate that your testosterone levels are too low:

  • Mood changes
  • Decreased body hair
  • Increased body fat
  • Decreased muscle mass and strength
  • Decreased libido
  • Inability to maintain an erection

While these changes can have other causes, it’s not unlikely for testosterone to be a major culprit. Fortunately, it’s very easy to find out with a simple blood test.

Supporting Your Man

If you suspect that your significant other might be suffering from low testosterone, you’ll need to approach the matter delicately. Not being able to maintain an erection once or having decreased libido temporarily doesn’t necessarily indicate that anything is wrong.

On the other hand, if your partner hasn’t been in the mood for a while and seems irritable in general, then there is a cause for concern. You probably know best which other factors might be at work. If your partner is stressed at work or unemployed, then that is a likely culprit, too.

When talking to your partner about his health and well-being you probably shouldn’t emphasize the possibility of low testosterone levels. It might make him feel scared or threatened. However, it’s a good idea to nudge him to get checked out as soon as possible.
