Woman in MenopauseAs women enter menopause, it’s not uncommon for them to experience hot flashes and night sweats. Unfortunately, it can take several years for the symptoms of menopause to subside. In the meantime, you may have hot flashes every day. Is there anything you can do to prevent or relieve hot flashes when they occur? Yes, you can try to avoid common triggers, reduce the intensity of hot flashes when they occur, consider taking supplements, or take prescription drugs.

Avoid Common Triggers

The things that tend to trigger hot flashes are often things you have been doing all along, for example, drinking coffee. Unfortunately, in order to avoid hot flashes, you should try to avoid consuming products with caffeine, drinking alcohol, eating spicy foods, and smoking. Even being in a room where you’re exposed to second-hand smoke has the potential to trigger a hot flash. Of course, hot flashes are also more likely to occur when you’re stressed out, when you’re wearing tight clothing, and when you’re exposed to heat.

Reduce the Intensity

When a hot flash occurs, you can try to reduce its intensity by staying cool. You should always keep your bedroom cool at night, and whenever possible, you should wear light layers of clothes. Natural cotton is more breathable than other types of fabric, but you can experiment to find out what works best for you. As contrary as they may seem, both exercising and deep breathing exercises can keep hot flashes at bay if you do them daily. Obviously, you won’t be doing these at the same time. Finally, you can try using a chill pillow at night to prevent night sweats.

Take the Right Supplements

During menopause, your body is going to need additional vitamins and minerals. For example, you can try supplementing your diet with Vitamin B and Vitamin E. Of course, the best supplements won’t help much if you’re not eating a well-balanced diet. In fact, you may be sabotaging all of your efforts if you don’t eat enough healthy foods. Finally, you need to stay hydrating by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

Consider Prescription Drugs

On average, menopause lasts for seven years. For some women, it lasts even longer than that. Chances are you’re not willing to live with hot flashes and night sweats for that amount of time. Therefore, if nothing else works, it’s certainly a good idea to look into hormone replacement therapy. At the Revive Health Center, we have the necessary knowledge to make you feel comfortable again.
